Basic Holdem Rules

Basic Hold-Um Rules

Hold-Em poker differs from some more familiar forms of poker in that it is a -flop- game.

In flop games, such as Hold-em, Omaha and Pineapple, players use a combination of their own cards (hole cards) and community cards to make the best 5 card hand possible.

In Texas Hold-em, players first receive two down cards . After a round of betting, three cards (called the flop) are dealt face up on the table. After another betting round one more card (called the turn) is dealt. After another betting round , the final community card (called the river) is dealt . After the last betting round the hole cards are then turned over. Your hand is determined by using the best five of those seven cards (in any combination) with the best hand winning the pot.

The Blinds

Every table has a dealer button which rotates clockwise around the table after every hand. The Blind/s are forced antes put in by the player (or players) to the immediate left on the button. Each rounds betting action starts with the play to the left of the blind. Note: some games use two blinds, they are referred to as (large/big), and (small )blind.

Betting Limits

In limit Hold-Em (the most common variety), there are usually a maximum of four bets per betting round. One bet plus three raises. The betting amounts are generally standardized. In a $5/$10 table for example $5 bets are used after the deal and flop. $10 bets are used after the turn and river cards are dealt. Pot limit and no limit Holdem generally have no limit to the amount of raises allowed.

The best way to learn Hold-em rules is to log on to one of the many online poker sites and play one of their free (play-money) games. Then develop your skill by playing in low-limit games. Each game is like a free lesson.
