Basic Omaha Guide

Basics of Omaha High Low Poker

Omaha poker is often played high/low, which means that the highest and lowest hands split the pot.

Game Structure

  • Each player receives 4 hole cards.

  • Players must use exactly 3 community/board cards and 2 hole cards to make their hand.

  • Aces can be low or high, & straights and flushes dont count for when determining the low hand.

  • Players often tie for low, & the low half of the pot is split evenly between them. When 2 players tie for low, it it commonly known as being 'quartered'.

  • Players may use a different 2 cards to compete for the high and low portions of the pot, and this game plays "cards-speak" instead of "declare".

8 or better

Omaha (High-Low) is usually played as '8 or better'. This means the low hand must "qualify" by being at least an 8 low (the biggest card must be 8 or lower). A low hand can only be awarded if there are 3 different cards between Ace-Eight on the board and at least 2 different cards between Ace-Eight in a players hand. If these conditions do not exist, then the entire pot is awarded to high hand only.
