Online poker differs from live-action poker in
several important respects.
1. An online poker dealer can easily deal 40 games or more an hour.
The average for a live action dealer is closer to 20. Therefore the potential
money that can be won (or lost) is much higher in an online game of the same
limit.
In the beginning at least, adjust your game to a lower limit. i.e., a
2-4 game online plays more like a 3-6 game live.
2. Tells
Unlike live-action poker, there are no tells (ex. twitching eye) in the online
variety.
However, there is the opportunity to make notes about a player ( rather
his ID) and
the style of poker they play. Some online poker sites even allow notes to be
made online, using their software.
3. A common misconception about online
poker is "the dealer is always right". Not true. The dealer is only right
about 99.9% of the time.
If you feel you have unfairly lost a pot due to a mistake, try e-mailing the poker
site in question. Be sure to include as many details of the hand as possible
such as the hand # ,the hand you had, your id, etc. (the author has done
this on 2 occasions and received his fare share of the pot!) Try to do
this as soon as possible after the hand in question.
The best way to learn Hold-em
rules is to log on to
one of the many online poker sites and play one of their free (play-money)
games. Develop your poker skills by playing in low-limit games. Each game is like a free lesson. |
